There is something so captivating here!
A faithful representation of a natural thing but rendered in such a quiet fashion that you are now focused on the inherent structure and rhythm of that thing and not distracted by its native color If someone delivered the flower itself to the table, you might focus on it more briefly. But when such a captivating
Art and Artisanship, the subject of so much of my time, so much of my passion.
What does is all mean?
If asked to define "artisanal", here is what I would say: when someone is able to have the space, time and determination needed to identify, refine and nurture their God-given talents such that the quality of their work is able to be a reflection of, and a revelation and inspiration to themselves and others, that is where "art" is born.
Last year my focus was on the person or persons who made great art or artful decorative things and while there are a couple of those examples this year, my "horizon" is expanded a bit to include examples where an aesthetic experience - not just an object-has been carefully created, curated or assembled by someone with vision, passion, skill and a unique style.
The Haven Smokehouse
Declan McConnellogue wanted to experience the tastes of his childhood, so he built The Haven Smokehouse. On the shores of Sheepshead Bay in County Donegal on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way, Declan uses 10,000 year old turf (dirt about 2 feet below the heather that has compressed over thousands of years) to smoke salmon from a time gone by.
When I started on this journey,
I only knew one thing - I had to do it!
There was a picture in my mind,
Of what the ultimate smoked salmon should look
and taste like.
