Wine

Picture
Suffice to say the following :

  1. I like wine.
  2. That said, I know just about enough on the topic to last about 45 seconds amidst serious wine banter.
  3. Though I find the subject very intriguing, I have failed at several attempts to read books on the topic.
  4. My abiding concerns are about  a) budget, b) type, c) schedule and, c) ease of delivery (how much, when is it 'acceptable' to commence consumption and where did I put the corkscrew the last time it was used?)
  5. The notion of "Approved Cellar time" spoken of by serious wine buffs is hysterical to me: our wine store is 7-10 mins from the house and unless I have been distracted by another errand, "cellar time" likely means 7-10 mins added to the time required to find the corkscrew! (Okay, so perhaps that is an exaggeration for effect...but rather than set the record straight, I'll let you ponder the precise degree of exaggeration.)
  6. Speaking of corkscrews : love the Rabbit Pull  especially.
  7. While I am intrigued by certain wine glasses, we err on the side of durable vs "correct" for the type we purchase and the jury is still out for me on stemmed vs stemless.
  8. I am convinced that I missed the chance to make millions in "the wine business"....(see pic below) but I'll let you decide.
  9. LOVE wines from the Chateauneuf du Pape region of France but as they are "budget busters", I have only had the pleasure to share a handful of bottles over the years--and have never been disappointed!
  10. Dying to hear about other people's favorite wines…

Five Wines to consider:

1. CLINE Cashmere: Great value. People are fond of saying that it taste like a much more expensive wine.                                          I
prefer to say simply that is good and a great value--end of story.

2. Trefethen Chardonnay: A gift and we will keep following this one. They make great Reds as well.

3. Educated Guess: Bought it for the honesty of labeling, and like it.

4. La Quadrilla: Stoplman Vineyards: Also a recent gift and it's a wine I will look further into in the future.

5. Château du Vieux Lazaret:  Yummy....from the C du Pape region.

Other:

6. The Kingdom of Wine, by Ted Murphy: fascinating book that I have 3/4 read, 1/4 perused about Ireland's "Wine Geese", the
families in  the 18th and 19th c who let Ireland to pursue careers in wine making and the business of wine in general. Some of the
most famous names in wine,in France and the US especially, have Irish family origins, Chateau Lynch Bages, Chateau Leoville-
Barton, Hennessy, just to name a few. The book features labels of over a hundred wineries that have Irish roots!

7. See the humor that's in it: some chuckles. (below)

8. Wine store today and of the future: interesting to see what may be coming.(below)

9. Wine Poster: interesting also. (below)

10. Missed opportunity: Many years ago when Patti was competing in Endurance riding competitions on weekends, I was "left to my own devices" with the three boys. On one such weekend, after getting them settled into some activity, I decided to reward  myself with a "wee glass" ( I am certain it was after 5 pm...) and while searching, yes, even back then, searching for the corkscrew, I opened a seldom used drawer in the kitchen where we "collected" corks from wines that we liked.

Under the influence of divine inspiration and, well, wine... along with the aid of superglue, I fashioned (yes, that is the  right word for it) a trivet out of the corks. When Patti arrived home I proudly presented the article and after rewarding me with a combination of concerned looks and laughter, she decided that perhaps she was spending too many weekends away.

For years (many years) this trivet became the subject of gentle (but real!) derision at parties until 2015 when, lo and behold, what did she spy but a coaster made in the same spirit (see pic) and so now the "spin" has shifted to the
missed economic opportunity that was in it! I am still waiting for the apology. Mmmmmm...hhhmmmm

Post-script to this story:

I remember with some nostalgia the moment when we had to discard our first Rabbit-pull corkscrew and the shock that lingered on our faces when we realized that each of the tines (screws)....of which there were two in the box....were said to have a maximum capacity of 300 cork removals. My suspicion is that like so much marketing, that this was over-promising and under-delivering but still...OMG! Trivets for everyone!
